We Serve, Inc. welcomed veterans, distinguished guests, family and friends to the third annual We Serve Awards Presentation and Veterans Day Concert celebrating our nation's veterans through music and the spoken word at the magnificent Washington, D.C. Temple Visitors' Center on November 12, 2016. The program was written by We Serve's own Celia Straus, and featured opening remarks by We Serve Board Member Monsignor James D. Watkins; special guest speaker U.S. Army Major General (Ret) Michael Dunlavey; The Washington D.C. Temple Orchestra; The Mormon Choir of Washington; and closing remarks by U.S. Army Major General (Ret) Peter Cooke.
We were privileged to again have a dramatic reading of war letters by the Pickwick Players -- special thanks to our performers Michelle Detweiler, Milan Detweiler, Alison Lewis, and David Sturdevant. The letters were provided courtesy of Andrew Carroll, Director of the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University (www.warletters.us).
We Serve's Chairman, Mr. John Kristoff, presented the 2016 We Serve Awards to The Bob Woodruff Foundation and The Atlantic Council for their outstanding service to transitioning, post-9/11 veterans through the Take Point Initiative. Since 2014 the Take Point Initiative has supported veterans pursuing careers as nonprofit and thought leaders in the policy field, providing them with a voice in key discussions shaping American foreign policy, national security, and the narrative around veterans in America.
